Cinereous Vulture and Eurasian Griffon
The Cinereous Vulture and Eurasian Griffon are two of the largest birds in the world, with wingspans in the 8-10 foot and 8-9 foot range, respectively. The Eurasian Griffon (the predominantly brown and white bird in the photo) is highly social; well over a hundred of them will congregate around a carcass. They have complex hierarchies that are constantly being tested in their jockeying for position by the food. The Cinereous Vulture is more stand-offish. In Bulgaria we saw up to fifteen of them at one time, and they tend to lurk individually or in pairs near the food. But when the Cinereous makes its move, it is decisive and powerful. It's stalk becomes a run, and if the competitor does not back down instantly, the run becomes a jump, with wings fully spread and talons out. There is the occasional griffon who will withstand this charge and fight back, once in awhile the the griffon will even win the scrap. But largely, the Cinereous Vulture eats at the place and time of its choosing. Bulgaria, June 2023.
