Vermilion Flycatcher on green.
Male Vermilion Flycatchers are a bolt of red in the dry U.S. Southwest. As flycatchers they are relatively conspicuous, perching on small branches and fence posts, frequently sallying forth to nab insects mid-air. The trick to photographing them is to seek them in dappled shadows; bright sunshine thoroughly mutes the brilliance of their feathers. I photographed this particular flycatcher along the Salt River in the Tonto National Forest, Arizona. April 2023.
