Cassin's Vireo with Antlion, Angeles National Forest.
This photo was taken August, 2022, in an area of the Angeles National Forest burned by the Bobcat Fire, 2020. I was on an exposed ridge with intermittent burned trees. This Cassin's Vireo had just caught an antlion when I spotted it, and the bird was in no hurry to leave while it carefully positioned the antlion before devouring the entire insect in a single gulp. It was early in the morning, after official sunrise but before the sun had actually climbed over the ridge to the east, providing soft backlight and velvety-purple undertones for this shot.
