Black-bellied Plover at sunrise
Coal Oil Point near Santa Barbara is an interesting spot, because you can actually watch the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. This also means, after you've shot those beautiful sunrises, you can find almost any type of lighting you like for wildlife photography given the angle of the sun to the beach. In this photograph, I positioned myself to shoot this Black-bellied Plover about halfway between side-lighting and back-lighting. This allowed me to get more detail in the bird than a silhouette, but maintain backlit highlights on its half to my left, and also catch that gorgeous sunlight on the water. November, 2022.
