Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at dawn.
There are three species of gnatcatcher in the U.S. Two of them have a limited range, but the most common one is probably the prettiest. The male Blue-gray Gnatcatcher has a heavy black "eyebrow" in breeding season, which, combined with beautiful blue-gray feathers on top and back, make him absolutely striking. These tiny birds flash their long tail feathers, bright white at the edges, as they move through the brush to scare insects into leaving their hiding spots. All gnatcatcher species are very territorial, so Spring is a great time to see the males displaying themselves on prominent perches. April 2023.
