Painted Redstart portrait
The Painted Redstart is a tough bird to photograph. Like all warblers it's fast and tiny. If you expose to bring out detail in its black feathers, you'll likely blow out the highlights on its white feathers or in the background. And it lives in the tree canopy, so hitting the necessary shutter speed for such a restless soul forces a high ISO. But such an extraordinarily beautiful bird merits extraordinary effort to photograph. The Painted Redstart is primarily a Mexican bird, whose range extends into eastern Arizona and western New Mexico, plus a bit of Texas. It practically dances along tree branches, rapidly pivoting and fanning the white in its tail feathers like a flamenco dancer, which flushes insects from their hiding places.
