Costa's Hummingbird
One of my favorite desert meadows has a couple dozen Costa's Hummingbirds who live in it. The males, with their bright purple helmets and mustaches, are striking, but in my experience considerably more shy than the females. Each hummingbird in this meadow has staked claim to a patch of chuparosa ("hummingbird bush"), which blooms almost year-round. The territories are relatively stable, but every couple of visits I'll notice someone has taken over a new territory (particularly easy to spot when the gender of guardian has changed).
