Costa's Hummingbird in Chuparosa
The Chuparosa thrives in the deserts of the Southwestern U.S., and where you find them, you will find hummingbirds. This photo was taken in the Anza-Borrego Desert, in a large canyon meadow protected from the sun for a third of the day. There were more than a dozen flowering plants when I visited, but the Costa's Hummingbirds mostly had eyes for the Chuparosa; they love this stuff. The dozens of hummingbirds had divided the territory into fiefdoms, and were in near-perpetual motion defending their individual fiefs of about three Chuparosa bushes. February 2013.
