Egyptian Vulture soars in the Rhodope Mountains.
The Egyptian vulture is on the ICUN list of endangered species. Much smaller than the other vultures I observed in Bulgaria, the Egyptian vulture stays near the back of the pack while the big birds fight things out, and occasionally grabs morsels on the periphery. They also tend to stay late at the sight, dining after the larger vultures have left. The mature adults are predominantly white while the immature birds are predominantly brown. The immature vultures invariably back down when a mature adult approaches their food site. While these birds are not nearly as feisty as the Eurasian Griffon and Cinereous Vulture, the adults will occasionally duel over food in quick bursts. Bulgaria, June 2023.
